Bernadette doesn’t have to think about it, she won’t be going to visit her father. It is that simple. He is powerless now, confined in that home, impotent. Drained by his infirmity and looming death his old world had shattered, and his connections had withered. Ultimately, he was undone by his family – shame corroding his defences from within – blindsided by relationships he barely cultivated or cared about.

She sensed she had been his favourite out of all his children, but that had not been enough. A childhood of occasional off-kilter tenderness was unsustaining. Her father who couldn’t abide his son yet never absolutely gave up on him, could never give his untrammelled affection or respect to a woman. A proponent of the rights of the underdog, a fighter for justice, yet he was a traditional chauvinist, unchanging, an unthinking dinosaur, of the deadliest sort. How galling for him, close to extinction, to be so uncomprehending, to have no idea what was going on and to have all his attempts at understanding fail. She had confided in her father once and he had corrupted her trusting words into a sentence of death, one that had destroyed not only Captain Clive Stephens, but also his own family – Mary, John and the twins. Bernadette had brooded on this guilty secret all her adult life and had nothing more to say to her father.

Smiling she waved goodbye to her brother, disappearing into the weekend murmuring to herself.

“Evil has no favourites among the weak.”
